A new crisis appears in Orange. Unions are on the rise as talks begin over the future of the stores and the workers who work there. The incumbent operator has about 500 stores in France, half of what it was ten years ago. About 6,000 people work in the distribution industry, but only 2,000 could be affected by further developments.
With store traffic down around 30% since the start of the pandemic, the group wants “Reimagining the in-store experience to deliver a better continuity of digital experience.” In this context, some of the stores may leave Orange’s fold and join its dedicated distributor subsidiary, GDT. The latter already has 200 stores in its arms.
