Observation is harsh on the operator, but rarely are the breakthrough technologies developed by its research labs reaching customers. Orange Innovation, however, has a magnificent campus, the Orange Gardens in the Chatillon district of Paris. It was opened with great fanfare in June 2016 by then-President Francois Hollande. Since then, Orange Innovation, which employs 8,000 people including 700 researchers and has a portfolio of 9,000 patents, has launched its Djingo connected speaker with its own voice recognition system. A beautiful industrial fiasco that ended with the product being abandoned in 2020. Poorly advertised in the group’s stores, it never found its audience.
And this is indeed one of Orange’s innovation concerns. every organization in this company can decide to adopt an innovation. Or not? The relationship is further complicated as Orange Innovation “sells” its services to other entities unwilling to spend…
