‘Fuuu/haaa’: Why does the blower blow cold air out? There is a scientific answer to the viral question

Before leaving our mouth, the air always has the same temperature: the temperature of our body. | Font: Photo by Julien L on Unsplash

There are questions on the Internet that may sound like a joke, but they may not just be an interesting answer. One of them verbatim: “Why, when we blow”fuuu”Cold air comes out and when we blow”ha haIs hot air coming out?

The question is based on empirical experience and the sound that is usually made when air is blown in or out. But is there really any scientific principle that defines this state?

The science behind the question

There is a physical phenomenon called Bernoulli effect. This, discovered by Daniel Bernoulli in 1738, indicates that as the speed of the air flow increases, the pressure in it decreases.

Due to this, for example, when blowing, the ambient temperatures are attracted to the jet that comes from our body, cooling at the same time (the ambient temperature is lower than that of our body). The farther you are, the colder the air will be.

When we do”ha ha“With an open mouth, a mass of air cools down longer. When we say “fuuu”, just the opposite, there is less time.

But this does not happen in all cases. Humidity outside and in our lungs is also an important factor: in the sauna, the “fuuu / haaa” phenomenon does not occur.

Rewards for eccentrics

Everything has a scientific explanation, but not everyone is ready to explore it.

Every year there is an award for precisely this, for scientific research, which can often sound absurd.

This year 2022, in its 23rd edition, the editors Annals of Incredible Researchscience humor magazine, has rewarded the most extravagant research with funny titles and descriptions published in prestigious academic sections around the world. It’s IG Nobels.

The science that attracted the most attention among the winners was economics.

This award was given for research that attempted to mathematically explain why success often goes not to the most talented people, but to the most fortunate.
