Twitter is revising its moderation policy around permanent bans

For several months, Twitter has been considering loosening its content moderation policy, Financial Time reports. The company is exploring more flexible moderation tools that could replace the toughest disciplinary measure the platform can impose, the permanent suspension of user profiles.

The question is whether the final conclusions will sit well with Elon Musk, who may control Twitter with multiple twists and turns at the end of the series.

In May of last year, immediately after the announcement of the acquisition of the Californian company for $44 billion, the billionaire has explained on many occasions that the rules of the platform are too limited for him. According to him, freedom of speech should be absolute.

The head of Tesla and SpaceX also announced that he was ready to bring back Donald Trump, judging by the sanctions of Twitter. “morally reprehensible and deeply stupid”.

Donald Trump remains banned

A policy change that heralds the former president of the United States’ return to his beloved network. Nothing is less certain, according to the British business newspaper. In January 2021, after supporters of the Republican billionaire stormed the Capitol, Twitter deleted Donald Trump’s profile. His tweets “Very likely to encourage people to reoffend”reports the Californian company.

But the mitigation of punishments for incitement to violence is not discussed. Platform teams are focused on mitigating permanent suspensions for less serious offenses such as spreading fake news.

“Our core principles of choice and control, transparency, legality and fairness have guided our work for years. As the public debate evolves, so will our approach.”A network representative told Bluebird to Reuters.
