Microsoft’s acquisition of video game giant Activision-Blizzard won’t be a quiet river for long. Britain’s Competition Authority (CMA) announced on Thursday the opening of an in-depth investigation into the impact of this $69 billion purchase on the future of the gaming market. In particular, the CMA seeks to determine whether Microsoft will not gain a decisive advantage in the emerging market for video game streaming platforms, in which it is one player, with its Game Pass subscription offering.
“While the video game console market is highly concentrated (around Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft), the CMA believes that the shift to streaming and subscription is a window of opportunity for new entrants. But to succeed, they need to offer an enticing catalog of games.” explains the British anti-monopoly organization.
