probe sent POT to Moon, CAPSTONEencounters more than one problem on the way to the satellite.
The mission is currently in safe mode after a problem was discovered in the trajectory correction maneuver on 8 September.
What’s going on with CAPSTONE?
Spacecraft “Experiment on technologies of a circumlunar autonomous positioning and navigation system” (COMPLETION) was performing its third trajectory correction maneuver on September 8 when it encountered an unspecified problem at the end of the burn, the space agency said.
This problem put the spacecraft into a safe defense mode.
“Mission team COMPLETION well aware of the status and status of the spacecraft,” said POT in a statement. “The mission operations team is in communication with the spacecraft and is working to find a solution with support from the Deep Space Network.”
POT issued the statement hours after satellite observers noticed unusual network activity related to COMPLETIONwith several antennas at a network facility in Goldstone, California, trying to contact the spacecraft.
This behavior is similar to what happened when the spacecraft experienced a communication problem shortly after launch in July.
Why is CAPSTONE important?
COMPLETION This is a mission funded POT to test operations in the nearly rectilinear halo orbit around the Moon that the agency plans to use for the Artemis lunar exploration campaign, including Gateway, a manned orbital base.
The spacecraft will also test its ability to autonomously determine its position in this orbit.
