A team of researchers tested the humor of Erika’s device by creating four short dialogues.
A team of a laughing robot named Erika at Kyoto University has created a system that can improve natural conversations between humans and AI. He aims to recreate the nuances of humor by laughing in the right way at the right time.
“We believe that one of the important features of talking AI is empathy. Therefore, we decided that one of the ways that the robot can empathize with users is to share their laughter,” said the lead author of study that Dr. Koji Inoue.
He and his colleagues decided to teach their AI system the art of colloquial laughter. The scientists collected training data from more than 80 speed-dating conversations between male university students and a robot initially controlled by four novice women.
Dialogue data were annotated for solitary laughter, social laughter (which excludes humor, such as polite or embarrassing laughter), and happy laughter. The materials were then used to train a machine learning system to decide whether to laugh and choose the appropriate type.
“Our biggest challenge in this work is identifying actual cases of shared laughter, which is not easy because, as you know, in most cases, laughter is not really shared. for our analysis, and not just assume that any laughter can respond to,” added the researcher.
The team tested Erika’s sense of humor by creating four short dialogues that she could share with someone by integrating the new shared laughter algorithm with existing communication software. They were compared to scenarios where the robot didn’t laugh or made a general laugh every time it detected laughter.
“We think they can show this through their communication behaviors such as laughing, looking, gestures and manner of speaking. Although it may take more than 20 years before it is possible to have a casual communication with a robot as a friend. They are not smart, but they are very good at making you believe that they understand what is going on,” concluded the expert.
It will be remembered that the most advanced humanoid robot in the world called Ameka has ensured that people have nothing to worry about, because androids will not take over the world. According to him, they are here to help and serve the people.
