These sand formations are called dunes and are found in deserts on Earth.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft on the Red Planet took pictures of dunes called sand dunes. This was reported by ScienceAlert.
These sands formed along a rock in Chasma Boreale, at the north pole of Mars. The new MRO images show an area less than a kilometer across captured by the camera lens from an altitude of 197 km.
Barchans form in sandy areas where the wind blows in a dominant direction. This creates a crescent shaped sand. The sand arches that define dune dunes form as “horns” that point into the wind as sand is blown onto ridges and slopes.
The photo was taken with a red-green-blue filter on the camera, which gives the sand a blue tint.
