POT translated the first images of the telescope James Webb in sound, in a process already known within the agency as “sonification”.
Images are converted from raw data by taking infrared wavelengths and assigning them a hue.
Space photos you can hear
Soundscapes including image translations Carina Nebula and South Rim Nebula, they use sound processing to transform images and data into sound effects.
“Music affects our emotional centers,” said musician Matt Russo, a professor of physics at the University of Toronto who worked on the project. “Our goal is to make Webb’s images and data understandable through sound, helping listeners create their own mental images.”
“Space Rocks” Carina Nebula, an impressive celestial object filled with stars, gas and dust, becomes a sparkling symphonic card. Gas and dust have shades of drones. The orange-red bottom of the image is melodic.
on the side South Rim Nebulathe sound is darker.
What does an exoplanet sound like?
Webb’s atmospheric data for the gas giant exoplanet WASP-96 b has also been converted into a soundscape.
Voice acting brings a new dimension to discovery James Webb and make the telescope more accessible to blind and visually impaired space enthusiasts.
