This is a careless mistake that cost Crypto.com dearly. An employee of a cryptocurrency exchange platform unwittingly sent $10.5 million to one of its Australian users instead of the $70 he requested, a daily newspaper reported. The Guardian:. The platform employee mistakenly entered the account number of Thevamanogari Manivel user in the payment amount field, which therefore corresponds to 10474143.
Although this accidental transaction dates back to May 2021, Crypto.com management discovered the error only nine months later during an external audit of the company’s funds. The case was recently publicized as the company decided to sue Thevamanogari Manivel in the High Court of Australia to recover the funds.
The judge in charge of the case found out in recent weeks that the user had spent a significant part of $10.5 million to buy a luxury mansion in the suburbs of Melbourne. He would then transfer the property to his sister who resides in Malaysia. The remaining amount would then be distributed among various accounts of Thevamanogari Manivel’s relatives.
The Australian woman, who was subpoenaed several times, never appeared before the judge and never responded to emailed inquiries from Crypto.com’s lawyers. A High Court judge is now ordering the freezing of all relevant bank accounts.
