One of the largest personal media hosting and video streaming services announced the launch gap security. Plex, a platform with over 20 million users worldwide, has issued a warning about a security breach found in its system.
AT mail sent to all users plex alerts you to an incident logged in the user database and you will most likely be one of the affected parties if you receive a message to your email account associated with the service.
Plex and Damage Report
The Plex statement details what happened: “Yesterday we detected suspicious activity in one of our databases. We immediately launched an investigation and it appears that a third party was able to access a limited set of data, including encrypted emails, usernames and passwords.”
Because of this, Plex requires its users to reset access with a new password. However, the platform ensures that the relevant credit card information has not been compromised as a result of this breach.
“Please rest assured that the credit card and other payment details are not stored on our servers at all and were not vulnerable in this incident,” Plex notes.
Change plex password
Because of this gap, Plex recommends that you perform an in-app password change. To do this, you must access the service with your account and find the “SECURITY” option in the ACCOUNT tab. From there, you will be able to sign out of all devices and change your password.
“We have already reviewed the method this third party used to gain access to the system, and we are conducting additional checks to ensure that we further harden the security of all our systems to prevent future intrusions. While account passwords have been secured in accordance with best practices, we ask all Plex users to reset their password.”mentions Plex in an email sent to users.
Additionally, as a precautionary measure, Plex recommends enabling two-step verification on your system, a mechanism that allows you to add an extra layer of security to your access. In this case, we can scan the QR code with apps like Authy or Google Authenticator and sync the six-digit code that appears on the screen with the app.
“We are well aware that third parties will continue to infiltrate IT infrastructure around the world, and you can rest assured that we at Plex will never rest on our laurels in strengthening our security and protection,” Plex said in a statement.
