Internet user privacy association Noyb has filed a complaint with Cnil against advertising emails sent by Google to users of its Gmail email service, it said on Wednesday. Cnil approved the filing of Noib’s complaint without further comment.
Google”sends unsolicited emails to Gmail users directly to their inboxon behalf of its advertising services corporate clients, Neub said in a statement. However, according to Noyb, the European ePrivacy Directive prohibits companies from sending unsolicited advertisements via e-mail. Google declined to immediately comment.
Neub (abbreviation: “None of your business“, it is “this is none of your businessFrench) is an association founded by Austrian activist Max Schrems, who already has many hits on major internet platforms. Max Schrems has already twice had the US-European agreement on transatlantic data transfers revoked due to threats to privacy in US security laws.
In France, its association, with its French counterpart La Quadrature du Net, is the basis for Cnil’s sentencing of Google with a €50 million fine for insufficient information on Android users’ handling of their personal data.
