The map shows hundreds of thousands of mineral deposits that were affected by water billions of years ago.
Scientists have created a new map of Mars that shows which surfaces of the Red Planet are covered in water. Gizmodo writes about it.
It is noted that the new data can be used to plan future unmanned and manned missions, because in these areas it is best to create a future Martian colony.
The study using two orbital spacecraft: Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was conducted by an international team of scientists. They lasted ten years. So there is a map of hundreds of thousands of places with mineral deposits that were affected by water billions of years ago.
“A new detailed map of Mars shows the location of deposits of hydrated minerals. In these minerals, water molecules are combined with other chemicals. This happened due to the fact that these rocks in Mars’ distant past has been modified under the influence of water present on the planet. This map shows “Which places on Mars had a lot of water billions of years ago. Before this map appeared, scientists knew only about a thousand places where hydrated mineral deposits are located. But in the new map, scientists have indicated hundreds of thousands of such regions of the Red Planet,” the researchers said.
At the same time, while scientists are not sure if there is water on Mars continuously, and then suddenly disappeared, or if it appeared and disappeared in the early history of Mars. They believe that water cannot be quickly absorbed and lost from the surface of the planet. Most likely, various geological processes took place on Mars, which have not yet been studied.
