Mice that ate sugary soda had damage to the frontal cortex, which is responsible for memory and learning.
A team of scientists found that drinking sugary sodas like cola and pepsi caused enough brain damage in rats to cause memory problems. Reports on futurism.
It’s no secret that sugary soda is considered a healthy food. It is full of sweeteners, real and fake, and many studies prove that the sugar contained in such drinks leads to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cavities, and liver complications.
But according to a new study done on mice in three age groups: two months old, eight months old and fourteen months old. Then, each of these age groups was divided into groups – some regularly drank only soda, while others replaced soda with water.
After 57 days, the scientists performed a maze behavior test on the mice, and after 10 days, the mice were euthanized to examine brain differences.
In the analysis, it turned out that the rodents who drank sugary soda with water were in perfect order. But those who drink exclusively soda do not. During behavioral tests, the scientists found that most of the soda-drinking mice, such as two- and eight-month-old mice, were unable to complete the maze. Rats who mixed soda water did the same task without any problems.
At the same time, experts discovered during the study of the brain that all the rats that drank only the sweet drink had damage to the frontal cortex. It is responsible for skills such as attention, memory and learning.
However, the scientists noted that it cannot be said that people drinking soda can lead to the same damage.
