Wi-Fi has been around for over 25 years, providing better and better wireless communications through its various versions.

But what exactly does Wi-Fi mean?

Wrong answer that has become common

For many years the same members WiFi Alliance answered this question with “Wireless Fidelity”, but that’s wrong.

turns out WiFi it didn’t mean anything when it was invented. It is not an abbreviation and has no other meaning in its origin.

In an interview with Phil Belanger in 2005 for Boing Boing, Phil Belanger, co-founder of WiFi Alliancetell what happened.

then called Wireless Ethernet Interoperability Alliance called the first generation of its wireless protocol “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence”. Obviously, this name was not easy to remember.

Interbrand was hired to find a name that would be much easier to advertise. Among the various proposals, one stood out:WiFi”.

Why error?

Belanger points out that “Wireless Fidelity” came about out of fear of his colleagues, who had no answer when asked what it meant WiFi.

For a while it became a slogan WiFi be the “Wireless Quality Standard”.

Over time, this slogan disappeared WiFi got a lot more presence.

Wi-Fi is preparing for a new version

With years of opportunity WiFi they are improving with Wi-Fi 6E as the latest version.

Intel expect us to see WiFi 7 in 2024, primarily laptops.

WiFi 7 It will be twice as fast as its predecessor with speeds up to 5.8 Gbps, and will also provide lower latency and greater stability.
