galaxies NGC 4568 D NGC 4567 are going to merge as a foretaste of what will happen when Milky Way and its closest large galactic neighbor, andromeda galaxywill collide in about 5000 million years.
The ghostly image was taken by the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii and shows the pair galaxies spirals that interact when they start colliding and merging.
These galaxies entangled by their mutual gravitational field and eventually unite into a single galaxy elliptical after about 500 million years. The image also shows the bright remnants of a supernova discovered in 2020.
unique event
Gemini North, one of the Gemini International Observatory’s twin telescopes, observed the initial stages of this cosmic collision about 60 million light-years away in the direction of the constellation Virgo.
Two majestic galaxies spirals, NGC 4568 (below) and NGK 4567 (above), one of the most exciting events in the universe is about to happen – a merger of galaxies. At present, these centers galaxies they are still separated by 20 thousand light years (approximately the distance between the Earth and the center Milky Way) and each galaxy it still retains its original pinwheel shape. However, these serene conditions will change, says NOIRLab, which operates the Gemini telescope, in a statement.
As NGC 4568 D NGC 4567 come together and merge, their dueling gravitational forces will cause flashes of intense star formation and brutally distort their once majestic structures. For millions of years galaxies they will repeatedly intersect in ever-shrinking loops, drawing in long streams of stars and gas until their separate structures merge so completely that a single galaxy, essentially spherical, emerge from the chaos. By then, most of the gas and dust (fuel for star formation) in this system will have been used up or removed.
Someday it will happen to us
This merger is also a foretaste of what will happen when Milky Way and its closest large galactic neighbor, andromeda galaxywill collide in about 5000 million years.
Bright region at the center of one of the broad spiral arms NGC 4568 this is the afterglow of a dying supernova known as SN 2020fqv, which was discovered in 2020. The new image of Gemini has been obtained based on data received in 2020. Combining decades of observations and computer simulations, astronomers have found compelling evidence that galaxies such fused spirals become galaxies elliptical NGC 4568 D NGC 4567 they will eventually resemble their more mature neighbor Messier 89, an elliptical galaxy also found in the Virgo Cluster. Due to a lack of star-forming gas, Messier 89 currently exhibits minimal star formation and consists mainly of older low-mass stars and ancient globular clusters. (EuropePress)
