Researchers want to use artificial intelligence to understand the communication of all kinds of animals.
The American non-profit organization Earth Species Project wants to understand the language of animals and communicate with them using artificial intelligence. This was reported by The Guardian.
In the past, researchers were able to detect the messages of animals during observations, but thanks to the sensors that animals can carry on themselves, more data can be collected, and artificial intelligence can understand the these.
In particular, scientists have previously developed an algorithm that analyzes the grunts of pigs to determine whether the animal is experiencing positive or negative emotions. Also, the DeepSqueak research team can tell if mice are under stress based on their ultrasonic signals.
Now, the Earth Species Project wants to create tools that will help study the communication of all animals, not just one species.
“We don’t know how animals see the world, but there are emotions, such as sadness and joy, that some of them share with us and can communicate with other members of their species,” said the scientist.
ESP plans to first use artificial intelligence to automatically determine what the animal is doing (for example, if it is feeding, resting, traveling or talking), and then add audio data to see if the calls are related to these behaviors can be given a functional meaning.
Since animals communicate with more than just voice, different ways of communicating need to be explored.
It was previously reported that a pair of fossilized panda teeth were found in Bulgaria, which are among the last pandas in Europe.
