Bill Gates and his investment fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) have begun supporting an air conditioning startup called blue border with a $20 million round.
The rate is not surprising if we know the goals that it pursues. blue border: be respectful of the environment.
Why is Bill Gates investing in Blue Frontier?
blue border working on technology that will make air conditioning be more efficient with fewer harmful environmental by-products.
A start-up uses a third to a fifth of the amount of refrigerants that a conventional system would require, and because the machine’s design differs from that of a conventional air conditioner, it can use a refrigerant with potentially lower global warming.
The technology, according to CEO Daniel Betts, was discovered in the midst of an operation to eradicate airborne anthrax: using liquid desiccants, chemicals with lower vapor pressure levels than water. When moist air passes through said product, water is extracted and dried.
They claim this results in a 60% reduction in annual energy consumption and an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
against climate change
In March, the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center released a study that found that air-cooling air conditioners emit 531 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, and that 599 million tons are emitted when moisture is removed.
“The summer demand peak is not just a problem because it causes power outages,” Betts said. “This increases the cost of electricity and increases greenhouse gas emissions.”
Expected that blue border will launch its products in 2026.
