Argentine paleontologists discovered a new type of ancient reptile Kostensuchus androx, who lived 70 million years ago and even chased for dinosaurs.
Argentinean scientists reported the discovery of the unique outstanding fossilized -PRODUCTION timely residue of a large crocodyl -such as reptile, which lived 70 million years ago in the Plains of Patagonia. The new species is called KosTensuchus ATROX.
The found was made in Chorillo’s geological education deposits. In the last Cretaceous season, this region was hot and wet, with rich floods, where dinosaurs, the first mammals and other animals lived.
The main feature of the opening is a very well -altered outline that includes the skull, jaw and body parts. This gives scientists a rare opportunity to study in detail the structure and lifestyle of an ancient predator.
According to researchers, Kostensuchus ATROX reached 3.5 meters long and weighs about 250 kilograms. Powerful jaws with large teeth allow him to hunt even medium -sized dinosaurs.
The name of the species has a symbolic sense: “Kosteen” in the technical language means “the air of Patagonia”, “Sochos” refers to the crocodile god in Egypt’s myth, and “Atrox” in Latin is translated as “Lyutius”.
The new species belongs to the group of peerosaurids – ancient relatives of modern crocodiles and alligators that are comfortable in water and on the ground. He became the second largest fatter in the development of Chorillo and the first representative of the crocodyl -as found in these deposits. This discovery indicates a more complex ecosystem of Patagonia than the previously considered.
Paleontologist Fernando Novas from the Argentinean Museum of Natural Sciences noted that this discovery not only describes a new species, but also provides more knowledge about the relationship between predators and their victims in this region.
Earlier it was reported in the IKU desert in the south of Peru, researchers discovered the remains of a massive and long -showed whale.
