Staff reduction of more than 20% is associated with the White House’s desire to reduce government spending.
Nearly 4,000 NASA employees are in the process of participating in the postponed refusal program suggested by the Donald Trump administration, Space reports.
The Deferred Distment Program provides that participants receive paid administrative leave until the agreed date of dismissal.
In the first phase of the program, which was completed in February, approximately 870 people came to participate -4.8% of NASA personnel. In the second phase, the deadline where expired on Friday, approximately 3,000 employees were submitted, which was 16.4% of the state. This stage also includes similar programs – early retirement and stimulation of voluntary removal.
According to the NASA News Service head of the News, Cheryl Vorner, the number of dismissals may change somewhat: some employees may remove applications, and others may refuse to participate. In addition, since Trump entered the post in January, it also disappeared about 500 people as a result of a natural staff flow.
Generally, by January 9, 2026, the number of NASA employees can be reduced to about 14,000 people, which means a reduction of almost 21% compared to the previous level.
Personnel deduction is part of a broader NASA budget plan, proposed by the Trump administration.
