In southern Spain, archaeologists stumble upon the traces of an unknown Jewish community. The Guardian reported it.
During a re -analysis of those found in the ancient regulating of Katulu, researchers have finished the building, considered an early Christian basil for decades, could have been a Jewish synagogue in the 4th century.
Excavations in the area of the modern city of Linares were conducted in 1985-1991. They then found a rectangular building with features of Christian architecture, but there was no characteristic funeral or religious symbols. Instead, a baptisteria was found in the city intended for the baptismal ritual.
A new construction view was provided by fresh archaeological found: fragments of oil lamps with menorah, tiles with a five -light image and a jar cover with a Jewish inscription. According to scientists, inscriptions can mean phrases such as “Light of Foristiveness” or “David’s Song”.
The Baptist archaeologist explained that the layout of the structure is closer to a square form, which is common for synagogues, where worship is held around the central Bima, unlike basil with elongated nave and apse.
It is interesting -friendly that the building is located next to the ruins of the Roman bath – an area that during Christianization was detected as a symbol of paganism. It can also be the basis for the Jewish community to live next to it.
If researchers’ hypotheses are confirmed, we are talking about one of the most ancient synagogues in the territory of modern Spain. Currently, the country’s surviving synagogues return to the Middle Age.
Although there is not enough written evidence, archaeologists believe their evidence is a bit convinced. Bautista Seprian’s note: “The criticism will be, and this is normal. But we believe we represent a serious scientific argument.”
In any case, the discovery confirms the existence of a Jewish community, peacefully with the Christian in the 4th century.
Earlier it was reported that the British HMS Nottingham Warshiks Sunk during World War I was discovered in the North Sea.
