To date, it is believed that the limitation of the acidity of the ocean has not exceeded, but a new study says that critical limit was violated five years ago.
The world’s oceans are in the worst state, previously considered, scientists warned. According to the Guardian, according to new data, the level of sea water acidity has reached a critical mark – it brings an existing threat to sea ecosystems and coastal economies.
To this day, it is believed that the border of the acidity of the ocean has not crossed. But a new study conducted by scientists from the British Maritime Laboratory in Plymouth, the National Administration of the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research of the USA and the University of Oregon showed: the “planet border” was violated five years ago.
“Ocean acidity is not just an environmental crisis. It is a slow bomb for sea ecosystems and the economy of coastal regions,” said Professor Steve Viddikub from PML, co -chair of the Global Ocean Acidity Monitoring Network.
Researchers have reviewed the data over the last 150 years: chemical and physical water indicators, including from ice samples, and also imitating the consequences for sea life. The results showed: in 2020, the average level of ocean acidity in the world reached or exceeded the critical border, defined as a reduction in calcium carbonate concentration in water by more than 20% compared to pre -industrial period.
In deeper layers, the situation is worse. At a depth of 200 meters, almost 60% of the oceans exceed the safe level of acidity.
“Most sea organisms do not live on the surface, but deeper,” said Professor Gelen Findley from PML, “these are these waters above all, and the consequences can be more serious than we expected.” Particularly we talk about coral reefs – both tropical and deep -sea – which is important media for many sea species, but most corals can die soon.
The only way to stop global acidity of the ocean is to reduce CO2 leaks, those who have a study are emphasized. At the same time, urgent environmental measures are required precisely in the regions and for species the most vulnerable.
We will remind you, earlier it was reported that the richest 10% of people were responsible for 2/3 of the global warming.
