Archaeologists have discovered a woman’s funeral in necropolis of Sarno Port, which could be a priest of the goddess of fertility.
In the elite necropolis of the harmon port in Pompeii, archaeologists discovered a unique grave, probably belonging to the priest of the goddess of Ceres’ fertility. The opening was reported in the heritage, IFLSCIENCE reports.
It was the first confirmation of his cult in the ancient city, which is an important victory in the scientific.
In a luxurious funeral complex, researchers stumbled into a high relief – a sculptural composition of full size describing a man and a woman. The female figure attracts the special attention of the scientists: she holds a laurel branch -a symbol of cleaning and offering rituals, and also wears a necklace with an amulet in the form of a crescent (lunula), which connects it to the lunar cycles and the goddess cerera.
These details suggest that the female is a priest – the highest social status, which a woman can be in the Roman Empire. Scientists have noticed that such a position has given women a significant public weight, similar to the priests used.
The lack of grave inscriptions does not allow the woman to be identified with confidence, but sculpture symbolism is unique. This is the first such image in Pompeii, which may indicate a priest with the characteristic objects of his cult.
This discovery significantly fits the knowledge of the pompey’s religious, social and political life on the eve of 79 catastrophe of our time and testifies to the active participation of women in public and spiritual spheres of the city.
Earlier, it was reported that in the northern province of Baknin, Vietnam, archaeologists found two well -seasoned ancient wooden boats with a unique two -structural manufacture.
In the UK, they found a goddess sculpture of success for more than 1800 years
