During the excavations in the territory of Roman Fort Windoland in the UK, archaeologists from the charity of the vindolanda trust found a rare relief of sandstone – a sculpture with an image on an airplane – with the Roman Goddess Victory Victoria.
He was found in a layer of blockage in the former infantry barracks of the wife of Jim and Dilis Quinlan’s volunteers from Mersisaid, who participated in excavations for 21 years.
The relief measures 47 cm high, 28 cm wide and 17 cm deep, suggesting that at the moment it is part of a larger architectural structure. Found dates from about 213 era and one of the most significant artifacts of recent years in this region.
Victoria – the Roman analogue of Greek goddess Nicky – introduced military success and an important symbol in Roman culture, especially after the end of the wars. His image in Windoland was of particular importance, as the barracks where the bas -Relief was found immediately after the north septimium’s Emperor Septimium campaigns were completed.
According to excavation director Andrew Birli, Find remembers that Roman forts were not only a military function, but also a culture and symbolic value for soldiers living there.
