Excavations significantly deepened the understanding of the city’s structure and the day -to -day life in the lower city of Kaisraugst during the Roman era.
In the city of Kaisraugst to the north of Switzerland, archaeologists discovered a well -seasoned Roman road with porticos, children’s funerals and rare artifacts, Armeonews reports.
Excavations occurred as part of the large -scale Schürmatt rescue project on the territory of the ancient Roman city of Augusta Raurik, founded in 44 BC -the most terrifying Roman’s north of the Alps.
The work was carried out by the Cantonal Archaeological Department of Aargau from May 2024 to March 2025. Excavations are required due to plans for the development of residential buildings of two plots of land. Because the area is located next to the famous Roman necropolis, the study is accompanied by careful planning. Archaeologists used the results of geophysical studies conducted in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and even changed the excavation plan to maintain individual funerals.
The discovered stone road of about four meters wide has traces of repeated repair and equipped with storm and portico canals on both sides. The cellars were closely found of two narrow residential buildings (the so -called strip), facing front of the road -a typical development for the Northwestern provinces of the Roman Empire. Behind the houses are domestic courtyards with stone mines, which may have served as a bathroom or pantry. In both yards, many children’s funerals have been found – in the Roman Empire, infants are often buried at home due to a high degree of mortality in children.

The copper brass of panther
Archaeologists have been dating the development of the district period from the end of the 1st to the 3th century AD. Last Roman activity was proven by many coins and individuals found. Among them are very rare things: a bronze of Panther bronze, a Tufu Vostle holder and a glass of mosaic spinning, which indicates religious habits, lives and crafts of the residents of Augusta Raurika.
This project is the first for the Department of Archaeology Aargau, which is fully recorded in digital format. All of these archaeologists are inserted directly into the digital base directly at the excavation site, ensuring high accuracy and efficiency. This method can be a new standard for archeology in other Switzerland regions.
We reminded, earlier reported that in Sicily they found the oldest semicircular audience of ancient Greeks.
In Egypt, they found a royal tomb and Roman workshop
