In Guatemala, archaeologists found the remains of children at the shrine of civilization, which could be sacrificed.
In the ruins of the ancient Tikal city in Guatemala, researchers were found at an altar created more than 1600 years ago, the remains of some children, perhaps sacrificed. This is stated in a study published in the Journal Antiquity, Popular Science reports.
The altar itself was first found in the 1960s. It is decorated with an image similar to the storm god – one of the gods of the Mayan Pantheon. New excavations have revealed not only children’s remains (in particular, a body in a seating position), but also the remains of an adult with a spear of a green obsidian spear – a characteristic of the Teotiuacan weapon.
Around the altar, the remains of three more children who are not even four years old are also found. This may indicate a ritual sacrifice, which, as a rule, is more often carried out accurately in Teotihuacan than Tickal.
Researchers were surprised that after the sacrifice, construction and the surrounding buildings were buried and did not build a new shrine in this area – unlike the Mayan traditions.
“Locals have treated this area almost like a memory or a radioactive zone. Perhaps, it indicates the complex emotion they experienced in relation to Teotiuacan,” commented archaeologist Andrew Sherer.
This found proves ancient assumptions about political intensity between the two major influences of influence and delivers a new light to the ritual practice of Mayan civilization.
Earlier it was reported that in Tanzania the police were detained by a 65 “sorcerer” in connection with the ritual killing of at least ten children.
