Austrian builders were accidentally stabbed in a Roman warriors during the rebuilding of the football field.
During the rebuilding of the field of football in Vienna, the builders stumbled into a unique archaeological found – the mass grave of Roman warriors dated in the first century of our time.
According to the Associated Press, archaeologists discovered the remains of at least 129 people, but their number could exceed 150. According to scientists, this was the first found in Central Europe, as the earlier traces of Roman battles in this region were confirmed only by artifacts found, and not the bodies of the soldiers themselves.
“There are almost no similar ones to be found in Roman history. In Germany, for example, they have found many weapons in the areas of ancient battles, but so that the bodies of the warriors have been preserved – it is a very extraordinary,” explained the leader of the excavation of Michaela Binder.
Scientists suggest that the soldiers died as a result of a fight with the German tribes during the Roman Empire’s military campaigns. The mass tomb is chaotic – the lips are thrown into a hole in a haste, without following traditional funeral rituals. This has been confirmed by many combat injuries – chopped wounds from swords, punctures of spears and traces of dumb blows.
The age of the dead, according to experts, is mainly 20-30 years. They had great physical health, which is common for Roman Legionnaires.
The results of the carbon review indicate that the funeral dates from 80-130 years of our period. It coincides with the Danube campaign of Emperor Domitian (86–96, ee), when the Roman Empire conducted a cruel against the tribes of the Dacians and Markomaniacs.
In addition to the lips, Roman weapons, wearing weapons and metal from military sandals were found in the grave. Archaeologists plan to study the DNA of the dead to find out more about their origin.
Earlier it was reported that French archaeologists had dug an amazing settlement in the O-De-France region, dated to the late bronze and early iron age, about three millennia ago.
