Archaeologists found 27 tools made from the bones of elephants and hippos to the famous Oldwai ravine about 1.5 million years ago.
Scientists have found in Tanzania the oldest bone tools created by a person’s ancestors about 1.5 million years ago, Reuters reported.
The identified artifacts can be the first example of the systematic manufacture of such tools, indicating a significant development of homo erectus.
Researchers have found 27 tools in the famous Olduy Gorge – one of the major areas for studying human evolution. Guns up to 37.5 cm long have sharp and heavy edges, indicating their possible use for processing the bodies of animals.
Most tools are made from the bones of elephants and hippos, usually in this region. Scientists suggest that elephants’ remains can be specially moved to the ravine to create tools.
It is known that the first stone tools appeared 3.3 million years ago, and the accidental use of bone guns was recorded about two million years ago. However, the search from Olduva is unique, as it shows a systematic approach to creating accurate bone tools.
Artifacts were found next to stone tools made at almost the same time. Researchers believe that the ancestors of the people deliberately use a variety of materials, understanding their property. It indicates the development of the capabilities of the provision and the improvement of technological skills.
Scientists have also noted that Homo Erectus chose the dense bones of the limbs for making tools, which requires knowledge of animal anatomy. “This proves that our ancestors were aware of the structure and fortress of the bones and intentionally used them to create effective tools,” archaeologist Ignacio de la Torre explained.
Researchers have added that making such tools requires special skills, as the bone differs greatly from the stone. Too strong a punch can break the material, so the oldest masters uses a technique similar to butsping – a way of rejecting small pieces to create sharp edges.
This finds will open up new prospects by learning human development, because before there is no such evidence of technology development during this time.
Earlier it was reported that the mysterious passage of underground, which Leonardo da Vinci himself could have designed, was discovered by researchers under the Sforz castle in Milan.
