Giant personal data hacks put Beijing to shame

A large army of censors has been deployed to drown out the news of a possible mass leak of the personal data of 1 billion Chinese people.

A hacker with the pseudonym “ChinaDan” announced on June 30 that he was in possession of a database of 23 terabytes of personal information. In addition to surnames, first names, dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses, the database contains ID numbers and references to crimes and offenses reported to the police between 1997 and 2019. The database was illegally sold for 10 bitcoins, the equivalent of $200,000, on July 5th.
