Ukrainians will be able to watch one of the most spectacular meteor showers. You can see up to 150 “shooting” stars per hour in the night sky.
The Geminid meteor shower peaks on Saturday night, December 14th. Ukrainians will be able to observe the cosmic phenomenon at two o’clock in the morning, reports Space.com.
It is noted that the Geminids are active from November 19 to December 24 each year. This year, the peak of the meteor shower will coincide with about 90% illumination of the waxing Moon. The full moon will appear on December 15th.
Also this year, at the peak of the Geminids, up to 150 shooting stars per hour can be seen in the night sky.
Unlike most meteor showers that people see on Earth, the Geminids are the product of an asteroid, not a comet. This shower produces bright meteors associated with the asteroid Phaeton, a spectacular blue rock that “moves like a comet.”
The Geminids are considered one of the best meteor showers each year because their individual meteors are bright and fly by quickly.
In total, the Geminids meteor shower is nearly 200 years old. The first recorded sighting was in 1833 from a boat on the Mississippi River in the United States.
We remind you that on December 4, two asteroids, each more than 300 meters long, approached the Earth.
