Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy named. VP The Filatova NAMS of Ukraine, located in Odessa, for the first time in the world, performed an operation to remove a large intraocular choroidal hemangioma in a 13-year-old patient. The operation was performed by Nikolai Umanets, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Retinal and Vitreous Pathology. It was reported by Interfax-Ukraine with reference to comments from establishment representatives.
“The surgical removal of intraocular hemangiomas is not carried out due to the very high risk of bleeding and the lack of effective methods for stopping it. small-sized formations In cases of large sizes, the only solution is The problem is the removal of the eye,” explained the institute.
In August 2023, during the pre-school vision examination, the patient complained of a slight loss of visual field, but there were no complaints of worsening vision, and they did not contact the doctors. During an examination in August 2024, doctors discovered that the vision in the left eye had decreased significantly. In an examination at the Filatov Institute, an almost complete retinal detachment and a new growth under it – a hemangioma – were discovered.
The situation is complicated by the young age of the patient—at a young age, tumors grow rapidly and act more aggressively—delay in seeking help, the large size of the tumor and unfavorable location almost near the optic nerve, and the development of a large retinal detachment with loss of vision.
A large hemangioma was removed for the first time in an adult patient at the Filatov Institute in 2020. Then Ukrainian ophthalmologists became the first in the world to perform such an operation (then, the removal of a small hemangioma was performed by an Italian doctor last year – also on an adult patient).
As in 2020, the emphasis was placed on a unique method of high-frequency electric welding of biological tissues in ophthalmology, developed by scientists from the Filatov Institute together with specialists from the Institute of Electric Welding named. EO Paton. This procedure makes it possible to remove a hemangioma from an adult patient at the Filatov Institute and can significantly reduce the risk of bleeding using unique tools developed by specialists from the two institutes. During surgery, each dissected vessel is “sealed” to prevent bleeding.
