A rare but deadly mosquito-borne disease has hit several US states, causing its first deaths.
Eastern equine encephalomyelitis, a rare but deadly disease transmitted by mosquito bites, is spreading in several states in the United States. The first death has been reported in New Hampshire, reports The Washington Post.
This chronic infection of the brain and spinal cord is transmitted by mosquitoes, especially those of the Culiseta and Aedes groups that live in wetlands. The highest risk of infection occurs in late summer and early fall, when mosquitoes actively spread the virus, which infects people, especially those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for prevention or specific medication against eastern equine encephalomyelitis.
Eastern equine encephalomyelitis infection occurs infrequently, with an average of 11 cases reported each year in the United States. However, the disease is currently spreading in states like New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. In response, some Massachusetts communities have imposed restrictions on outdoor activities after dusk, closed parks and rescheduled gatherings to reduce the risk of infection.
On August 27, the first death from this disease became known – the victim, whose name and age were not disclosed, lived in Hampstead, New Hampshire.
New Hampshire Department of Health state epidemiologist Benjamin Chan warned that the risk of infection will continue until the onset of hard frosts that kill mosquitoes.
It was previously reported that scientists analyzed a sample of ice from the Himalayas and found the genomes of 1,705 viruses in it.
