Boeing never ensured the safe return to Earth of its Starliner capsule, where the astronauts were supposed to return.
Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, stranded on the International Space Station, will be able to return in February 2025. This was reported by Reuters in connection with the American space agency NASA.
It was noted that Boeing never ensured the safe return to Earth of its Starliner capsule, which experienced several technical glitches during a test flight. In it Wilmore and Williams were supposed to return home in June.
If there is no progress in flight safety within the next month, the Starliner will have to be returned to Earth without a crew. And in its place, Elon Musk’s SpaceX Crew Dragon will leave in February 2025. The carrier will deliver the participants of the planned mission to the ISS and Wilmore and Williams will “evacuate”.
For Boeing, which is trying to compete with SpaceX, such a development would mean a serious blow to its reputation and ambitions. And for astronauts – another six months in orbit.
It was previously reported that Boeing and NASA conducted several tests on the damaged engines and investigated a spare module in the New Mexico desert to find out the reasons why the astronauts were stuck in orbit.
