In the US, a robot performed the world’s first dental procedure

For the first time, a robot independently performed the procedure of preparing a tooth for the installation of a crown. It took him 15 minutes to do this.

The company Perceptive from Boston, USA, developed a robotic dentist under the control of artificial intelligence, which for the first time independently performed the procedure for preparing a tooth for a crown.

Normally, a dentist spends about two hours on such a procedure, but the robot completed the task in 15 minutes, writes Popular Science.

“We are pleased to successfully complete the world’s first fully automated robotic dental procedure. This medical breakthrough improves the precision and efficiency of dental procedures and democratizes access to the best dental care to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes,” said company CEO and founder Dr. Chris Ciriello.

The company achieved such a significant reduction in time thanks to an “easy-to-use hand-held oral scanner” that uses optical coherence tomography technology. It provides three-dimensional data about the patient’s oral health, including what is happening beneath the surface of the tooth or gum line.

Perceptive also says its new 3D optical technology can detect tooth decay with high accuracy, unlike current 2D X-rays, which are only 45% effective.

According to Chris Ciriello, the company plans to increase the capabilities of the robot and expand the range of procedures. The first tests with volunteers were successful, and the robot is ready to work even in hard-to-reach places and difficult conditions, especially when the patient is moving.

However, the robot currently does not have approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so it may be several years before it is available to all patients.

It was previously reported that next year Tesla will start using humanoid robots for internal needs.
