An Indian teenager is among the few people in the world to have survived a rare brain-eating amoeba.
Indian teenager Athanan Jasim is one of only 11 people in the world to survive infection by the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri. The BBC reported it.
Athanan contracted the amoeba in June while swimming in a local lake in the southern state of Kerala. Two days after the swim, the man began to feel unwell. Doctors believe that the amoeba entered his body from contaminated water. This amoeba causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis, with a 97% mortality rate, but Afanan Jasim survived.
The teenager’s father learned about the dangers of amoeba from social networks.
“I read something about how seizures can be caused by this infection. As soon as Afnan started having seizures, I rushed him to the local hospital,” the man said.
The child was saved by the rapid diagnosis of the disease – only 24 hours after the first symptoms appeared. Afnan Jasim, 14, has been discharged from a children’s hospital in Kozhikode.
It was previously reported that engineers have created a prosthesis that helps sense temperature and touch.
In Taiwan, a man died from a “brain-eating” amoeba.
