Ukrainian veterinarians performed a caesarean section on a female bat for the first time. This was reported on the center’s page on social networks.
It is known that the patient is a rufous noctule, which was brought to the Ukrainian Chiropteran Rehabilitation Center from Poltava in the winter. On June 2, she began to give birth, but the fetus did not appear head first (as usual), but with wings.
The center’s specialists took the female to the CentrVet partner veterinary clinic, where she was cared for by doctors Vladislav Mirny and Anastasia Domanskaya.
The ultrasound showed that the cub was in the wrong position and that its head was larger than the width of the female’s pelvis. The doctors decided to have a caesarean section, but the baby did not survive the operation.
