Parent company Facebook is in talks with Apple about integrating the company’s Meta Platforms generative AI (artificial intelligence) model into Apple Intelligence, its recently announced AI system for the iPhone and other devices, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing its own sources.

Apple, a latecomer to generative AI, has reportedly developed its own small AI models but has announced it will turn to partners to perform more complex or specific tasks. When the new product was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this month, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was announced as the company’s first partner.

“We want to start with the best. ChatGPT is the best choice for our users today,” said Apple software chief Craig Federighi. He also said that Apple wants to integrate Google’s Gemini.

If Apple enters into agreements with external OpenAI partners, the company said customers will be able to choose which external AI models they want to use in addition to Apple’s internal systems.

Meta discussions highlight the unlikely alliances that have formed between big tech companies in the age of artificial intelligence. OpenAI technology will be built into Microsoft and Apple devices. And an agreement between Apple and Meta would be remarkable given how close the two companies disagree on other new technology issues.

Discussions are incomplete and may be broken. While deals with Apple will help AI companies gain mass adoption of their products, it’s unclear how financially beneficial it will be.
