The last time Ukrainian polar explorers recorded the appearance of an emperor penguin near the station was in December 2020.
The Ukrainian Antarctic station Academician Vernadsky was visited again by the emperor penguin. This was reported by the press service of the National Antarctic Science Center.
It is known that for the first time he chose the places near the geomagnetic observatory. Now he was looking at the large fuel tank with palm trees, the main entrance, the fire exit in the cockpits and the weather balcony.
“As we told you, for the first time this bird visited Galindez Island, where the Ukrainian station is located, in early June such a visit was a real surprise, because the emperor penguins do not nest in the Vernadsky area, but choose cooler territories. . Their nearest colony is located more than 300 km from us,” said the message.
According to scientists, the island was visited by a young penguin who recently left his parents. At this age, solo trips are common among them, as birds begin to actively explore the world around them.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, “prior to the publication of this report, polar explorers saw another large penguin on the other side of the island. It was seen from a boat during a boat trip, but the conditions of ice doesn’t allow them to get closer and find out what kind of species it is.”
