Buronius manfredschmidi is estimated to weigh only ten kilograms and is the size of a human baby.

The smallest known monkey that lived 11 million years ago was found in Germany. The Guardian reported this.

The creature, named Buronius manfredschmidi, weighs only 10 kg and is the size of a human baby. The discovered species belongs to the ancestral family that gave rise to modern humans, gorillas and chimpanzees.

The researchers examined the partial remains of two teeth and a kneecap, the size and shape of which indicate that the creature climbed trees. Also, the thin enamel and light wear on the teeth indicate that it fed on soft fruits and leaves.

In addition, scientists were surprised by the fact that the small monkey shared its habitat with another larger species, the remains of which were also previously found in Bavaria – Danuvius guggenmosi.

Lifestyle differences likely allowed the two species to share habitat without competing for resources, like modern gibbons and orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra.

Researchers do not have a definitive answer as to why Buronias manfredschmidi was smaller than other hominids. One theory is that these creatures varied in size to occupy a different ecological niche from their larger relatives. Or they are representatives of an older version of the great apes.

It was previously reported that scientists analyzed more than a thousand dinosaur fossils and found that these animals became warm-blooded about 180 million years ago.
