This Monday, New Zealand witnessed a strange cosmic phenomenon in their skies.

Various social media images showed what appeared to be a huge blue nebula-like spiral in the sky. The appearance of this phenomenon caused surprise, surprise and even fear.

What happened in the skies of New Zealand?

However, the source of this phenomenon is an increasingly common behavior in the world: launching space rockets.

According to experts such as Professor Richard Easter of the University of Auckland, this phenomenon is nothing more than a trail of fuel from a rocket used to put a satellite into orbit. On this day and at this time SpaceX with Globalstar satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“When fuel is ejected from the bottom, it creates mostly water and carbon dioxide,” Easter explains. “This forms a cloud in space that receives light from the Sun. The geometry of the satellite’s orbit and our position relative to the Sun does the rest, creating a glowing cloud show similar to the one we saw from the South Island.”

Chapter SpaceX, Elon Musk congratulated the Falcon team on the launches. “Congratulations to the team SpaceX Falcon for 3 flawless launches in 2 days!” he wrote on Twitter.

It’s not the first time

This phenomenon comes almost a year after a similar spiral was discovered in the Pacific region last year on June 18th.

This spiral, which was brightest in parts of the Pacific, has been spotted in places like Fiji, Samoa, New Caledonia and the tiny island of Tokelau.

Video footage taken by those lucky enough to see it shows the spiral expanding in size for a few seconds before disappearing as quickly as it appeared.
