Salvagnini is now responsible for aligning strategic vision and planning for NASA’s use of AI.
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration has appointed its first head of artificial intelligence. This is reported on the NASA website.
It is known that he became David Salvagnini. The position is an extension of his role as Chief Data Officer.
“Artificial intelligence has been used safely at NASA for decades, and as this technology expands, it has the potential to accelerate the pace of discovery. It’s important that we stay at the forefront of improving and using AI responsibly. In this new role, David will lead efforts to ensure the responsible use of our agency’s artificial intelligence in space and on Earth for the benefit of all humanity,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
Salvagnini will reportedly join NASA in 2023 after more than 20 years in the intelligence community. Before joining NASA, he worked in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as Director of the Architecture and Integration Group and Chief Architect.
Prior to Salvagnini’s appointment, the agency’s chief scientist, Kate Kelvin, served as NASA’s acting AI officer.
