The girl couldn’t stop smiling and was happy that she was about to fulfill her dream – to finally wear her wedding ring on her finger and get a manicure for the first time in her life.
Lvov surgeons operated on a woman who lived with her fingers fused for 30 years. This was reported on Tuesday, March 26, by the First Medical Association of Lvov.
“A rare hand syndrome, which occurs in only 1 person in 100 thousand, was corrected by specialists from St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Medical Unit of Lviv,” the message said.
The patient is 49 years old, her name is Lesya Buchatskaya, she lives in Lviv.
“As a child, she seriously injured both hands as a result of a fall. At the age of 17, Lesya underwent surgery to correct the consequences of the injury. However, the intervention, unfortunately, was unsuccessful. She developed and developed a serious pathology – the ring and middle fingers of both hands froze, They stopped straightening, and eventually they grew together. And only now – 30 years later – Lesya dared to trust the doctors,” they told the medical association.
The surgeons from St. Panteleimon Hospital performed a complex reconstructive operation and Lesya was diagnosed with Erles Danlos syndrome, an anomaly in the formation of connective tissue.
“The doctors explained: as a result of the trauma he experienced, a severe defect in both hands was formed and developed. The scars on the palms do not act on the 3rd and 4th phalanges and over time the fingers, which did not even expand, grew together. Modern methods make it possible to correct this defect,” – the message continued.
First, surgeons free the soft tissue from scars and adhesions, and then take a radial vessel flap with the patient’s own soft tissue and close the defect with it. The operation took six hours.
The patient faces a long period of rehabilitation, because the muscles and tendons have been lost for many years.
“And in a month she will have the same intervention on her second hand. The girl can’t stop her smile and is glad that she will fulfill her dream – to finally wear her ring on her finger and get a manicure for the first time in his life,” added the First Medical Association of Lvov.
