American cities are sinking due to subsidence

Rising sea levels and hazardous sediment pose serious threats to coastal communities and the environment.

The land beneath major cities on the East Coast of the United States is subsiding at an alarming rate. This is confirmed by new images obtained with NASA satellites, published in the journal PNAS Nexus.

The footage shows that from 2007 to 2020, the ground level under cities such as New York, Baltimore and Norfolk dropped by an average of 1-2 millimeters per year.

Scientists say the phenomenon threatens not only infrastructure and homes, but also agricultural lands and wetlands. They say subsidence is a major cause of sea level rise on the East Coast, increasing the risk of flooding and damage.

It has been noted that Charleston, South Carolina, one of the fastest sinking cities, is already sinking 4 mm per year. Settlement in Charleston, as in other cities, is due to human activities such as groundwater pumping.

In New York, soft soil and the weight of buildings contribute to subsidence.

We remind you that the residents of the small town of Victorville in California have become victims of plant invasion – tumbleweeds. Weeds invaded dozens of houses, which found themselves under two-meter rubble dry lumps.
