Scientists have discovered a well from an ancient city next to the famous Onofrio’s Fountain in Croatia.
In Croatia, near the Onofrio Fountain in the historic district of Dubrovnik, archaeologists discovered an ancient city well. It was reported by Arkeonews.
The discovery was made during the repair of the paving stones. Scientists have discovered the remains of a large city well, which was located there from the 14th century until the city’s water supply system was built.
The vault of the tank was found only 30 centimeters below the paving stones.
Before this, the ancient public tank was known only from archival documents. Its depth is about five meters.
It is known that the fountain of Onofrio was built in 1438 and supplied water to the city from a number of sources located 12 kilometers away. It was designed by the Italian Onofrio della Cava.
In the past, it was decorated with sculptures, but in 1667 it was seriously damaged by an earthquake, as a result of which only 16 carved masks remained, from which mouths dripped drinking water.
“The first evidence of the existence of this public repository dates back to the end of the 14th century. It is also known that at the end of the 15th century it was under the jurisdiction of the monastery of St. Clare and thanks to it. is has been restored,” said head of archaeological research Nela Kovacevic Bokarica to HRT.
The archaeologists also added that the vessel will be covered and protected with geotextiles before the stone paving is reinstalled. After all, this find is another confirmation of the rich history and social organization of Dubrovnik.
