The JWST space telescope was launched in 2021 and began collecting data in 2022, revolutionizing our understanding of the early Universe and capturing amazing images of the cosmos.
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured images of 19 spiral galaxies relatively close to our Milky Way. It was reported by Reuters.
It is known that these images are part of a large multi-year project called Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby Galaxies (PHANGS), supported by more than 150 astronomers from around the world.
It was noted that the telescope’s NIRCam (near-infrared camera) camera captured millions of stars in these images. Some stars are found throughout the “spiral arm”, while others are tightly packed into star clusters.
Telescope data collected by the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) illuminates the glowing dust, showing scientists exactly where it is around and between stars. The data also show stars that have not yet fully formed.
“These data are important because they give us new insight into the early stages of star formation. Stars are born deep in dust clouds that completely block light at visible wavelengths. We have no know too much about this phase, we don’t know exactly how long it lasts, and Therefore, this data will be important for understanding how stars in galaxies begin their lives,” said the astronomer and Oxford University team leader Thomas Williams.
So, the closest of the 19 galaxies is called NGC5068, it is located at a distance of about 15 million light years from Earth, and the most distant of them is NGC1365, about 60 million light years from Earth.

Hubble was previously reported to have photographed the spiral galaxy UGC 11105, located in the constellation Hercules.
