Ukrainian biologists continue to survey nearby islands and map nests to monitor the distribution and breeding of Antarctic birds in the context of climate change.
At the Akademik Vernadsky station, young South Pole skua were found. This was reported by the National Antarctic Science Center.
“On the islands of Skua, Black and Shelter, the polar explorers counted about two dozen nests of the above-mentioned birds. Most of them already have two young,” the report said.
It is noted that the south polar skuas is one of the main feathered predators of the Antarctic. They catch eggs, baby penguins and other birds. They also take food from cormorants and blue-eyed penguins when they return to their nests with loads of food from the ocean.
We remind you that the Ukrainian icebreaker finished its second season in Antarctica.
