The first three operations to introduce stem cells in Lviv were performed by an Italian surgeon with a team of traumatologists from St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital.
The first three operations to implant stem cells in children were performed in Lvov. This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lvov.
It is reported that the famous Italian surgeon Roberto Brambilla, along with orthopedists and traumatologists from St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lvov, successfully implanted stem cells in three Ukrainian children with impaired limb mobility.
“Intervention using stem cells is one of the leading methods of regenerative medicine in the world. And recently it was used for the first time in our hospital. This modern treatment method is an opportunity for young patients with injuries in burns and other pathologies to increase mobility in the limbs,” – explained the doctors.
The message briefly told the story of one of the patients.
17-year-old Bozhena from the Lviv region has a congenital fusion of the radius and ulna bones, which is why the palm of his left hand faces the opposite direction, which not only creates discomfort, but also prevents the girl to be free in everyday life. A year ago, the girl’s pathology was corrected in St. To speed up Bozena’s recovery, Roberto Brambilla suggested the use of stem cell implantation.
The rare operation was performed in several stages.
First, using liposuction, surgeons remove adipose tissue from the patient’s thigh and separate so-called mesenchymal stem cells from it, which in turn accelerates the process of tissue restoration in the arm. For Bozena, this operation is very important. After the death of her mother, the girl was raised independently by her grandmother. And now Bozhena strives to be a support for her beloved person,” the message said.
Doctors performed the remaining two interventions on children with post-burn and trauma pathologies.
