The function of the removed knee joint will be carried out by a leg sewn with a 180-degree turn, thanks to which the girl will receive a functional prosthesis and master walking.
In Lviv, doctors from three cities performed a rare operation – rotational plastic surgery. To preserve the leg function of a young cancer patient, surgeons removed the middle part of the foot, and turned the lower part 180 degrees and sewed it back to the front. A unique intervention was carried out in St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital, the hospital’s press service reports.
“Yulia from Ivano-Frankivsk found out about her dangerous diagnosis – bone cancer – a day before her 18th birthday. She hit her foot, went to the doctors and, after a thorough examination, heard the diagnosis: stage 2B osteosarcoma. Local oncologists at the Ivano-Frankivsk Children’s Hospital began to treat the woman regional clinical hospital. Six sessions of chemotherapy were prescribed, but it did not help. The disease progressed and could kill the child girl,” the report said.
The doctors concluded that the further spread of the tumor could only be prevented by immediate removal of the affected femur, but the cancer had already spread to the knee joint, so they were talking about a high-level amputation of the leg.
Doctors from Ivano-Frankivsk, Lvov and Kyiv, after several consultations, decided to perform a rare operation for Ukraine – rotational plastic surgery.
“Rotational plastic surgery is a surgical intervention in children in whom, due to bone cancer, part of the leg including the knee is removed. And the lower part of the leg, including the foot, is rotated 180 degrees and sutured to the femur – back. Thus, the foot begins to play the role of a knee, which allows for the subsequent installation of a functional prosthesis and, as much as possible, the sensitivity and mobility of the foot will be preserved, “explains by hospital doctors.
The hospital’s Facebook page describes the treatment process in detail.
“First, surgeons remove the bones affected by sarcoma: it is part of the thigh, lower leg and knee joint. In real time, just during the operation, specialists examine the tissue for malignancy in the laboratory to ensure that the entire tumor is removed – without a trace and with sufficient shrinkage. Next stage of the operation – the same rotational plasty. The team begins to connect two bones of different diameters – the femur and the tibia, the last was rotated 180 degrees – heel forward. After that, a plaster was applied and fixed on a metal plate. A rare operation for Ukraine was successful, “- said the message.
It is reported that the girl has already returned to Ivano-Frankivsk and continues chemotherapy, and after a while Yulia will receive prosthetics.
“The function of the removed knee joint will be performed through the foot, thanks to which the girl will receive a functional prosthesis and master walking,” the hospital assured.
