Off the coast of the Italian island of Sardinia, a diver discovered thousands of ancient copper coins. This was reported by AP in connection with the Italian Ministry of Culture.
It is known that coins from the first half of the fourth century were found in sea grass, on the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean island.
The exact number of coins found has not yet been determined as they are being sorted. A ministry statement said there were at least around 30,000, and possibly as many as 50,000 based on their total weight.
“All the coins are in excellent and exceptional condition,” the Italian ministry said. Some coins that were damaged still had legible writing on them, he said.
