During the excavations, the remains of the sunken city of the 4th century were discovered. Found foundations of buildings belong to the ancient city of Salamis.
In Greece, scientists have discovered a sunken ancient city, the remains of which date back to the 4th century BC. CBS News reports.
A 12-person team of archaeologists has discovered what is believed to be a massive public building that existed as part of the ancient city of Salamis.
In particular, experts discovered the remains of an ancient sea dam that once protected the city. In addition, they found a structure that seems to have served as a place of trade or a place of public exercise. The researchers also discovered a storage room containing many ancient artifacts, including about two dozen copper coins, marble fragments, vases and pottery fragments.
“According to the officials, there are two important objects among the marble artifacts. One is a column fragment with part of an inscription in 2-3 verses. The other is a decorated fragment depicting a big man, perhaps a hero, crowning a bearded man.” , the publication wrote.
It is worth noting that Salamis – both the city and the island of the same name – is best known for the Battle of Salamis in the 5th century BC, which became an important event in the Greco-Persian Wars, when the ancient Greek city – the states fought against the Persian Achaemenid Empire.
